A special treatment center for Muscular Dystrophy is operating in the name of Mayopathy  Institute for Muscular Dystrophy & Research Center at Veeravanallur, Tirunelveli, and South District of Tamil Nadu, India. The center has been providing Low-Cost treatment to children who suffer from Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy for the past 9 years.

Founder

Kumaresan Duraisamy, popularly known as ‘Nepoleon’ has laid the foundation stone of Mayopathy Unit of Jeevan Foundation. His contribution to society and Tamil Cinema has been outstanding and appreciative. He has been an inspiration to many children and works for the betterment of their future through innovative ways.

 


What is Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular Dystrophy or MD refers to a group of hereditary muscle disease that weakens the muscles, which moves the human body. It is characterized by progressive muscle weakness, defects in muscle proteins, and eventually leads to the death of the muscle cell and tissue. Mostly affecting boys MD reduces the life span of an individual. Hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, etc. are some of the ways to provide relief to the children diagnosed with the disease.

 

Mayopathy, the Institute for Muscular Dystrophy is his dream come true project that voices the need of the young masses, also influencing their lives in various ways.

 

Mayopathy  Institute for Muscular Dystrophy & Research Center

Mayopathy Unit of Jeevan Foundation, the Institute for Muscular Dystrophy & Research Center was established in 2010. It is a non-profit organization registered under the Tamil Nadu Trust Act. Located amidst a serene and soothing environment in Veeravanallur, a small hamlet in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu makes the work more encouraging and inspiring.

Treatment of Muscular Dystrophy:

It is sad but true that Muscular Dystrophy is not curable but undergoing therapies can help improve the lives of the child. Here at Mayopathy, Orthopedic appliances such as braces and wheelchairs are used to preserve the muscle function. Extensive researches are carried out to find a long-term solution to the problem but there are treatments, which are still in the experimental stage.

Special Water exercise



“Water is a great medium. In a pool, people with neuromuscular disease can move and do what they can’t ordinarily do on land,”. the magical properties of water will enable anyone to perform muscle-strengthening exercises without the jarring impact felt on land. Water exercise will help reduce water retention, increase circulation, limber and strengthen muscles, increase balance, and provide an aerobic workout. Additionally one can improve muscular strength reduce atrophy regain use and control of limits to stay active longer.

Jeevan Foundation

Jeevan Foundation was established in the year 2006, as a registered non-profit trust (Registration no. is 2057/2006, under Tamil Nadu Trust Act). The trust was established by like-minded people with the objectives of promoting all activities essential for the empowerment of Physical, Mental, Social, Economical and Educational status of the weaker sections of the society including the destitute, people with disabilities, and those suffering from various health hazards.

Screening Camp for 1,400 Differently Abled Persons

Jeevan Foundation conducted an assessment and screening camp for the differently-abled people in Tirunelveli, Thuthukudi, and Kanyakumari Districts. This program had been jointly organized by Jeevan Foundation, Lanco Foundation, NIEPMD, District DDRO, and Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. This program benefited more than 1,400 differently-abled people.

 

Mayo Rally

Jeevan Foundation has organized a rally on August 3rd at Marina Beach from 07.00 A.M. – 08.00 A.M to raise awareness on Muscular Dystrophy. The rally will be participated by the children in wheelchairs affected with muscular dystrophy and the philanthropic public. In spite of their busy schedules, Mr. Vijay Sethupathy, Ms. Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar & Ms. Gayathri accepted the invitation to ignite the rally.



Support for Special Children

Jeevan Foundation donated Rs.1.40 Lakhs towards conducting Chess Championship for Deaf & Dumb.

Objective

The main objective of our center is to improve the lives of children suffering from muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy through updated means and methods. Mayopathy  Institute for Muscular Dystrophy & Research Center, an exclusive and First – of – the kind institution, involving in developing unique methodologies and assistive devices to treat muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and other Locomotors Disabilities.
